Butterfly release

April 30th, 2008  |  Published in Everyday Life  |  Leave a Response

When the day came to release the butterflies, there was a bit of protest on the part of the butterfly care-takers.  I had to do a little sweet-talking with lots of assurance that they (the care-takers) had prepared these butterflies for life outside.

Both of the boys wanted to hold (then hopefully let go of and release!) the butterflies.  Their dad was there to help so you’ll see his hands with those of the boys. Read the rest of this entry »

Weeds revisited

April 25th, 2008  |  Published in Photography  |  1 Comment

When I first began to take photographs, I found myself often focusing on patterns and details.

One look at my photographs today and you can tell I still do.

Remember the weed bouquets?  My most recent bouquet came in the form of a single dandelion.  My eldest son had been inspecting the gift closely before giving it to me (I saw pollen on his nose and his chin).        :-)

After he left, I thought about what I might see if I also inspected the dandelion as closely as he did (Brooke, why didn’t you tell me I had yellow on my nose!).

A dandelion really is beautifully patterned.  My favorite angle is focused on the backside of its petals at what I would have called the sepals.  But I did look them up and they are referred to as bracts.  The bracts are in two sections or “series.”  The ones closest to the petals remain erect until the seeds are mature, and the outer bracts “flex” downward to release the seeds.

Any recommendations on a good macro lens?

Have a great weekend!

Black dogs

April 24th, 2008  |  Published in Everyday Life  |  Leave a Response

We have 2.

The youngest is in constant motion, flagrantly disobedient, and, in photographs, is often nothing but a blur with maybe  white teeth or a pink tongue showing up against all that black.

Unique superheroes

April 23rd, 2008  |  Published in Project 365  |  Leave a Response

We have all manner of superhero and supervillan costumes in our house (from Buzz to Zurg, Superman to Jango Fett).  But more often than not, my boys make up their own superheroes and supervillans (better mix of superpowers?!).  Here is one recent occasion.

Have a great Wednesday!  :-)

BTW, Project 365 is a way of creating a “daily photographic history” that not only documents a year but also pushes creativity.  There are many variations of Project 365 – check it out (www.photojojo.com/content/tutorials/project-365-take-a-photo-a-day/)!

Weeds

April 21st, 2008  |  Published in Everyday Life  |  Leave a Response

I have often been frustrated with the amount of weeds in our yard (if I kept up with the weed-pulling daily or even weekly, all would be good, but I don’t…instead I wait until our lawn and our flower beds are over-run, making the chore seem insurmountable!).

However, since I’ve had boys, weeds look a little different to me.

I’ve been given all manner of gifts…some with just a single dandelion,

Chrysalids!

April 18th, 2008  |  Published in Everyday Life  |  1 Comment

We’d been watching the caterpillars, as one by one, they hung down “head first” from the top of their cup.  By evening on the 10th day, all 5 of our caterpillars formed chrysalids.  On day 11 we moved the caterpillars to their butterfly garden habitat.
