Growing caterpillars

April 16th, 2008  |  Published in Everyday Life  |  Leave a Response

We are having lots of fun checking on the caterpillars and recording what we see each day.

It is truly amazing how big they get so fast!

By Day 3 we observed lots of silky webbing (this is supposed to be a sign that the caterpillars are doing well).  According to the information provided, the silk protects them and helps them to move about more easily.  We also noticed (much to the boys’ delight!) the frass (green balls of waste) left behind.  The boys are enjoying drawing pictures (I’ll spare you the frass drawings!) -

Meet Chris and Courtney

On Saturday, I met with Chris and Courtney.  I knew of them because we go to the same church, but I was so thankful for the opportunity to get to know them a bit better.

Learning curves

April 11th, 2008  |  Published in Everyday Life  |  1 Comment

Sometimes they are big…sometimes not as big…but learning curves always require persistence and patience.  Being a mom is a HUGE learning curve for me ( I think I’ve hit a few plateaus, quickly caught my breath, and then continued up!).  Being a photographer, being a wife, even being a friend…how many times have I said to myself, ” I just want to do it right the first time!”

So my eldest son started “coach pitch” this week – a new endeavor for him.  He’s excited to play, but he, too, wants to hit, throw, and catch “right” the first time.  Situations like these beg for my empathy and encouragement.  So, those of you who see me everyday – if you hear me whisper (or loudly voice!) a complaint about another coach pitch practice, please be my cheerleader and remind me of those learning curves that produce great persistence and patience…who couldn’t use a little more?!

I’ve got two fun sessions coming up this weekend, so be looking for a sneak peek on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Caterpillars!

April 10th, 2008  |  Published in Everyday Life  |  2 Comments

A very small box arrived in the mail recently.  The box was so far at the back of our mailbox that I almost missed it!  It was labeled “live butterflies – open immediately” and it was addressed to my two boys.

They’d been waiting for this very small package!  A few weeks ago, they received a live butterfly garden kit (www.insectlore.com) from their grandparents.  We sent in the certificate for the caterpillars after we returned from our Disneyland trip, since the kit included very specific instructions about caring for the caterpillars which, of course, means no vacations unless you have a caterpillar-sitter!

The caterpillars (we have 5) are to remain in their culture cup for 7-10 days, eating the nutrient at the bottom of the cup.  The instructions suggest keeping a butterfly growth journal – which we’ve begun –  so I’ll keep you informed as to their progress.

Meet Miss Shelby

April 9th, 2008  |  Published in Portraits  |  Leave a Response

While in CA, we were able to hang out with my good friend and her family.  We went to their house for lunch, and I was able to spend some time with her daughter while our two oldest boys were racing around the backyard playing (you guessed it!) Star Wars.

Meet Shelby

She gave me a tour of her castle and we played a few rounds of peek-a-boo through its many windows.

After lunch, Shelby settled on the couch to watch the Bee movie.  Life is good when you have your blankie.
