While in Santa Barbara, we visited the local zoo.
One of the many reasons I love the SB zoo is because I used to volunteer there. The giraffes with their black (sometimes pink too), very long (18 inches!) tongues always made me laugh! I kept a journal while volunteering at the zoo, and last night I looked through the first few entries, curious if I had actually fed the giraffes before (it’s really sad when I have to look it up!). Here’s an entry excerpt where I was helping a keeper clean out the giraffes’ nighttime enclosure. I was on the enclosure’s upper floor.
[The keeper] gave me a handful of hay and let me feed the male giraffe. I stood up on this platform which made my head a little higher than that of the giraffe. The giraffe was hesitant at first, but then proceeded to wrap his very long, black tongue around the hay and take it from me. While it was eating, I was able to touch its nose and face – quite an experience!! And lots of fun!!!
Since [the keeper] was still cleaning, I decided to stand next to the male giraffe, on the same level as him, with the tall fence between us. He is so huge!! I would still have to grow another three feet just to reach his shoulders!!!
If you want to know more about giraffes, the San Diego Zoo website has some great info.
So, we were standing at the giraffe viewing area when my boys spotted the lions in the distance, grabbed my husband, and ran that direction. My parents and I remained behind, reading the information about an unusual and well-loved giraffe that had passed away earlier this year. I was sad to see that she was no longer there.
As we continued to walk, we noticed a sign off to the side of the path that advertised feeding the giraffes. Everyone else was too far ahead, so the three of us decided to try it out.

While in Santa Barbara, we enjoyed some time at our friends’ pool. I enjoyed watching the kids enjoy the sun, the water, and each other.

We had a great time in Santa Barbara, relaxing and visiting friends.
We stayed in a great house with an amazing view! My boys loved the front patio area because of its huge magnolia tree (which made a great pirate island and ship!).

Before we left on our trip, I had a very fun senior session with Allie.
Here are a few “head-shot” photos (yearbook deadline quickly approaching!).
