Chrysalids!

We’d been watching the caterpillars, as one by one, they hung down “head first” from the top of their cup. By evening on the 10th day, all 5 of our caterpillars formed chrysalids. On day 11 we moved the caterpillars to their butterfly garden habitat.
You can see some of the silk made by the caterpillars.
What’s amazing to me is the shaking of the chrysalids! Especially after the move, all of chrysalids were shaking, almost violently. The information we received said that this shaking is “a natural instinct to ward off predators.”
We decided to keep the butterfly habitat up high, as the directions instruct, so that it is not easily bumped or knocked over during this time of transformation (utilizing the fishing rods…sorry to all you fishermen/women out there!).
The watch has begun! Some of the chrysalids are looking darker, which again, according to the information, means they are fairly close to emerging. I’m hoping that the boys get to witness the birth of a butterfly! Stay tuned…
