Wanted…a bird

I heard it first, then my boys heard it. It must have hit the glass two or three times before landing on the ground next to the window.
My boys and I carefully moved closer.
My eldest so wanted to hold it! He very gently cupped his hands and picked it up.
By this time our two Scottish terriers were highly interested in our find, so we decided to take the bird into our backyard.
We sat on the deck and watched the bird, still seemingly content to be held.
It was at about this time that the pleas began.
Can’t we keep him as a pet?
I’ve always wanted a bird!
Let’s just keep him ’til Daddy gets home!
If we can’t keep him, can we go to the pet store when Daddy gets home and get a bird we can keep?
Mom, I really want to keep him!
Don’t you have a bird cage somewhere?
Soon I noticed that my eldest was keeping his hands cupped a little closer together. I told him that I thought the bird might be ready to fly. My eldest wore such a sad face, but he did open his hands a bit, and the bird flew two feet away and perched on the deck railing.
You can imagine the events that occurred when Daddy did arrive home.
As of today, we are still a bird-less (and cat-less) home.

How cute! I seem to remember trying to save (and hopefully keep) hurt and orphan critters when I was a little girl. Wait a minute….now how did I end up with two little fur balls?

I agree, it was a (sweet) golden-crowned kinglet! Wonderful photos!
