Needed: tooth fairy
June 22nd, 2009 | Published in Everyday Life, Portraits | Leave a Response
You may have noticed in a few of last weeks’ photos that my youngest son had a loose front tooth. We’ve been waiting for it to fall out. Both his dad and his grandpa offered to help, but it was his older brother who finally kicked-in (literally) to help. They were arguing about something and my youngest threw a punch while my eldest kicked. After a moment of silence, I heard the exclamation “my tooth is gone!” Sure enough, he was one tooth down.
Close up

I found my first photographic subjects in nature’s details and patterns. They are everywhere and I could so easily spend an afternoon within a foot of a flower, in a tidepool, or near driftwood. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
I love it. As I was thinking about macro photography, I realize this is my tendency when shooting – I instinctively shoot tight. I have to make large mental yellow post-it notes to remind myself to back-up and capture the bigger scene.
I haven’t had a macro lens for awhile now. I’ve missed it. I often experiment with my other lenses to get the shot I want when I photograph patterns and details.
Last week, however, I purchased a macro lens and just yesterday spent some time enjoying it.
Start of summer fun

My boys saw these and it was all over.
Camouflaged-colored water balloons and slingshots – what else could make an afternoon go by so quickly?!

A year in review
June 12th, 2009 | Published in Everyday Life | 2 Comments
I have amassed these piles of projects and papers from this almost-done (today is it!) school year. Usually I keep up with their work (maybe doing a bit of recycling), but this year I haven’t. Although these forgotten piles make a bigger task, I think it will be good, even fun, to look back on a year and see again what my boys were taught (hopefully what they learned!), what they created, and what they accomplished.
A retreat

of sorts. God knows I wasn’t making time for it on my own.
A re-cap of the last 36+ hours -
Long flight/layover/day but had a great book.
Late arrival so was clueless for Monday morning’s workshop announcement.
In a bit of limbo…called airline…could get a flight out Tuesday afternoon.
O.k.
Called an elementary school friend who lives nearby. She was on vacation with her two boys (who also are 8 and 6 years old) so I wasn’t able to see her, but had a nice phone conversation and the promise of future e-mail conversations.
Went to the local Aveda school for a pedicure and met a fun, ready-to-graduate cosmetology student.
Tornado warning. Stayed in and ordered room service.

Slept more than my usual 6-7 hours.
Another travel day. Another good book.
Hugs from my husband and my boys upon my arrival at the airport.
Yes – a retreat despite lingering questions and hard circumstances.
