Plankton and petri dishes

My eldest’s third grade class recently enjoyed a field trip to a local nature center. The center is named for its lake, so appropriately on this field trip, the class studied aquatic life, spending quite a bit of time becoming familiar with petri dishes and pipettes, microscopes and plankton. Owling

Until we can go owling in the wild (check out the book Owl Moon by Jane Yolen – its been on our fav list for quite awhile!),
we’ve been cyber-owling.
A friend sent us this link http://www.ustream.tv/theowlbox on Saturday. I am as hooked as my boys! We love watching the barn owl mom (Molly) with her 4 owlets (Max, Patti, Austin, and Wesley). A quick word of caution – this is a live wild owl cam so all owl activity, including feeding, is shown. Yesterday afternoon, the eldest owlet, Max, ate a huge (for him) rodent and it was hilarious because afterwards he really was in a food stupor. He could barely stand and was teetering forwards and backwards. We also witnessed an owl pellet being expelled (I am so amazed by their digestive systems!). Sometimes, there’s not much going on except for sleeping, but we can still hear owl noises (chirps, whistles, etc.). If you check it out, let us know if you’re hooked too!
